The principle of peripheral vision is to reflect rays of light, which, in turn, are reflected from objects.

Despite the fact that lateral vision is characterized by the perception of unclear outlines of objects, it is an indispensable guideline in broadening one’s horizons and orientation in space, including in the dark.

Significant differences in peripheral vision are observed between men and women. A feature of the male visual field is a more focused perception, which has the characteristics of tunnel vision. This means that most men perceive visual information in a direct projection.

Women's peripheral vision detects the slightest changes in space, since the angle of the field of view is much wider than men's. In some cases, it can reach 160-180 degrees, which allows you to observe events happening around you without the slightest difficulty.


Impaired lateral vision is expressed in a person’s inability to perceive surrounding objects.

It is believed that for a long time a man was a hunter, that is, a breadwinner, whose main task was to see the prey in a timely manner and not lose sight of it until the very moment of capture. The development of peripheral vision can slow down the eye disease, and in the event of complications, its loss is irreversible. Due to the decrease in acuity, that is, with myopia and farsightedness, no significant changes occur. But there are more complex deviations, the influence of which must be stopped as soon as possible.

Glaucoma

The disease is caused by disturbances in blood circulation inside the eye:

  • high blood pressure has a negative effect on the main nerve;
  • the removal of fluid that accumulates near the cornea is disrupted;
  • Aqueous humor collects in the lens, which prevents light from penetrating the pupil and negatively affects the ability to see.

The disease can be caused by both congenital pathologies and stressful situations, steroid drugs, and physical trauma to the head, especially the facial part. Signs are a change in the color of the iris - greenish, emerald or the formation of a whitish shell on it. The patient often feels:

  • weakness;
  • headache;
  • rainbow glow in bright light;
  • blurred vision in a dark room or outdoors in the evening.


Scotoma

This is the name for a deviation in the form of partial loss of vision in the form of dark spots. The cause is various diseases: cataracts, glaucoma, congenital anomalies, as well as frequent neuroses. Both central and lateral vision are affected by the disease, so the patient experiences loss of coordination, dizziness and disorientation. Treatment for an illness begins with eliminating the root cause, only in this way the symptoms begin to gradually go away.

Ocular migraine

Visual impairment in the form of attacks of visual images that make it difficult to see clearly. A specific category of people falls under the attack of deviation, not the elderly, among whom eye diseases are common, but:

  • Imaginary strabismus.

  • Heterophoria.

A latent type of strabismus, which is caused by incomplete symmetry of the action of the extraocular muscles. At rest, when there is no need for binocular fusion of two images, the views of the right and left eyes are not consistent with each other. But if it is necessary to focus the gaze on an object, the visual axes again become parallel.

Thus, binocular vision in heterophoria is preserved in most cases.

By “field of view” we mean not only what a person sees horizontally, but also vertically.

Examination of the state of this vision is very important in diagnosing diseases of the retina, optic nerves and visual acuity. Peripheral vision impairment

Impaired lateral vision is associated with diseases of the retina, its dysfunction, and damage to the sensitive processes of the cells of the nervous system, which transmit visual information to the brain.

The most common cause of pathology is glaucoma. Persistent high intraocular pressure leads to damage to the optic nerve and a decrease in the visual angle of the eye. At the initial stage, small areas fall out of visual function. As the disease progresses, the boundaries become irreversibly narrowed. In severe cases, blindness occurs.

Retinal detachment, dystrophy, and vascular diseases of the eye can cause loss of lateral vision. The viewing angle decreases with tumors, traumatic brain injuries, cerebrovascular accidents, and hemorrhage.

Peripheral vision defects, types of scotoma:

  • positive (the person himself sees the spot, a missing area of ​​vision) and negative (the anomaly is discovered during the examination);
  • absolute (at the spot there is no visibility of the color and the object itself), relative (objects are partially visualized through the white film);
  • central, peripheral (according to location).

Defects are detected using campimetry. The patient is placed 1 meter in front of a black board and asked to fixate on a white dot located in the center. The white object is then moved to the side until it disappears from view. Mark this place on the board with chalk. This is done in 8 vectors.

Paralytic strabismus: the eyeball moves poorly

With this type of strabismus, only one eye deviates from the central visual axis, while its movements are impossible or limited due to damage to the extraocular muscle. Because of this, binocular vision is impaired, which leads to double vision and decreased clarity of visual perception. Paralytic strabismus can occur as a result of nerve damage or dysfunction of muscle tissue. Such defects can be congenital or caused by tumors, injuries, infectious and vascular diseases.


The most striking symptoms of paralytic strabismus:

  • limited mobility of the eyeball;
  • lack of binocular full vision;
  • frequent double vision;
  • dizziness;
  • the need to tilt the head towards the affected muscle.
