Composition and release form
Demalan is a domestic pharmacological development.
This is a white ointment with a delicate consistency, without foreign inclusions, with a pleasant smell of medicinal plants. The cream is packaged in 10 g bottles in plastic tubes with a screw cap. Secondary packaging is a cardboard box with instructions for use inside. The active composition of Demalan is represented by metronidazole from the clinical-pharmacological group of antimicrobial agents. To form it, the manufacturer used the following components:
- chamomile extract;
- highly purified native glycans.
Auxiliary components of Demalan are lanolin, olive oil. They act as stabilizers and are universal conductors of active ingredients into the deep dermal layers. These components of the cream also have therapeutic properties, enhance and prolong the therapeutic effects of the active substances.
The base of the cream is chamomile extract
After using the cream, a durable film forms on the surface of damaged skin areas. It prevents oxygen from penetrating inside, which leads to the death of mites and pathogenic bacteria.
Pharmacological properties
Most of the therapeutic effects of the cream are determined by the presence of metronidazole in the cream. Upon contact with microbial cells, it is reduced to the 5-nitro group. This leads to disruption of RNA replication of infectious pathogens, and then to their death. Bacteroides, streptococci, staphylococci, clostridia, Trichomonas, and Giardia have not developed resistance to the action of metronidazole. Its ability to inhibit the vital activity of mites that provoke the development of demodicosis has also been established.
A pronounced therapeutic effect is also characteristic of chamomile extract and glycans from the cream. In combination with metronidazole they exhibit the following pharmacological properties:
- prevent the spread of infection to healthy areas of the face and body;
- speed up metabolism;
- stop inflammatory processes;
- retain moisture in cells and prevent its evaporation;
- promote exfoliation of the keratinized epidermal layer;
- accelerate blood circulation in damaged tissues;
- stimulate the resorption of edema;
- eliminate rashes characteristic of infectious and inflammatory processes.
The cream exfoliates the keratinized epidermal layer.
Demalan's ability to suppress the activity of free radicals has been established.
Thus, the use of the cream prevents premature cell destruction. Accelerating metabolism in tissues affected by inflammation leads to an improvement in their trophism. By eliminating the deficiency of nutrients and biologically active substances, damaged skin is restored more quickly.
Indications for use
The main indication for treatment with the cream is demodicosis, caused by the introduction of Demodex brevis and Demodex folliculorum mites. Pathogens affect the skin of the face, eyelids, ears, and ear canals. Ticks live for less than a month, feeding on dead cells and sebaceous gland secretions. After the adult has laid eggs, it dies, and soon the larvae are born. Dermatologists prescribe Demalan ointment at the first signs of the disease. These are irritation and redness of the skin, severe itching, and rashes.
The main indication for treatment with demalan cream is demodicosis.
But the cream is especially in demand in ophthalmic practice for the treatment of demodectic blepharitis. This is the name of the pathology caused by mite parasitism on the upper and lower eyelashes. It manifests itself with a whole range of symptoms:
- excessive uncontrolled lacrimation;
- itching, burning, swelling and redness of the eyelids;
- dry mucous membranes of the eyeballs;
- the formation of scales on the eyelids, which when peeled off cause bleeding;
- accumulation of purulent mucous secretion in the corners of the eyes.
Demalan cream is also used when the eyelids and face are affected by a bacterial infection. It is often detected in demodicosis due to severe itching. A person scratches his skin, unwittingly injuring it. Staphylococcus aureus or epidermal staphylococci penetrate into microcracks, triggering the development of the inflammatory process.
The use of the drug is indicated not only for treatment, but also for preventive purposes. Dermatologists and ophthalmologists prescribe Demalan to patients to prevent Demodex mites from invading the skin. Application of the cream also prevents infection of the skin by pathogenic bacteria and fungi.
Analogs
What medications can replace Demalan (ointment)? Typically, such drugs perform similar therapeutic functions, but differ somewhat in their chemical composition.
Modern analogues of “Demalan” are “Blefarogel” and “Demazol” cream. The first one has a gel structure, but its scope of application is much wider. In addition to treating demodicosis of the eyelids, Blefarogel is recommended for relieving fatigue and swelling of the eyes, preventing dry eye syndrome, and eliminating problems associated with the use of contact lenses. The average price for this product is 250 rubles. Reviews about it are mixed. Many patients claim that with the help of “Blefarogel” it is not possible to completely defeat demodicosis, because “Demalan” (ointment) is primarily recommended for this disease.
Analogues of this product differ not only in therapeutic effect, but also in the price segment. "Demazol" is a cream that is similar in composition and mechanism of application to "Demalan". Indications for use of the drug are similar. Its average price is about 400 rubles.
Instructions for use
Compliance with the instructions for use of Demalan ointment is mandatory. The doctor will determine the optimal single and daily doses and duration of therapy. When calculating, it necessarily takes into account the severity of the pathology, the intensity and nature of the symptoms. The annotation recommends the following cream treatment regimen:
- wash with warm water and soap and dry your face, each time using a clean towel;
- treat the eyelids and facial skin with alcohol tinctures of eucalyptus, calendula or aralia;
- repeat the procedure after a quarter of an hour;
- soak a cotton swab in the ointment, preferably sterile;
- close your eyes and thoroughly wipe your eyelids, eyelashes, and inflamed skin;
- After half an hour, remove the remnants of the external agent with a paper napkin.
Pre-treatment with tinctures promotes better penetration of the cream components into the tissue. Treatment procedures are carried out twice a day at equal time intervals. The duration of the therapeutic course of the cream is 1.5 months. But in severe cases of the inflammatory-infectious process, it can be prolonged.
Wipe eyelids and eyelashes with a cotton swab and ointment.
It is not advisable to stop cream therapy after the itching has subsided and pimples and red spots have disappeared. The mites remaining in the skin become active again, provoking a relapse of demodicosis.
For children
There are no age restrictions for using the cream. It is prescribed by doctors to children when an infectious skin lesion is detected. But due to the presence of metronidazole in pediatrics, the cream is used quite rarely. Its dosage is usually reduced taking into account the weight and age of the child.
Overdose
An overdose with topical application of Demalan cream is unlikely. But it is possible if the product is accidentally swallowed and is manifested by nausea and stomach pain. In such cases, it is necessary to induce vomiting and take enterosorbent (activated carbon). And then you need to consult a doctor for symptomatic therapy.
Side effects
During treatment with the cream, no systemic adverse reactions were observed in clinical practice. Local ones occur mainly as urticaria. They are manifested by irritation, dry skin, burning sensation, itching. You should immediately interrupt therapy with Demalan and consult a doctor. Some side effects of the cream are reversible and disappear after reducing the dosage. But treatment with antihistamines may also be required.

Ask a Question
Demalan cream is a parapharmaceutical product. Therefore, it is not advisable to use it as monotherapy. The drug is used as part of a complex treatment of demodicosis, including that complicated by a bacterial infection. Prescribing the cream does not cancel course therapy with analgesics, antiparasitic, antibacterial, antimicrobial agents. But it is possible to reduce the dosage of the latter to reduce the pharmacological load on the body.
