A deficiency state can be induced experimentally by an excess of beta-alanine in the blood, since it will compete with taurine for the transporter due to its affinity for it. Guanidinoethane sulfonate (GES) is also used to artificially attenuate the influx of taurine. Genetic inhibition of the taurine transporter (TauT, also known as SLC6a6) and reduced influx into cardiomyocytes and skeletal muscle leads to cardiomyopathy, poor physical performance, and weight loss. Recognizing taurine deficiency in skeletal muscle is more difficult because both ways of reducing taurine influx affect muscle performance: both beta-alanine (a proven performance enhancer) and guanidinoethane sulfonate increase the Ca2+ response in muscle cells. In studies with knockout mice lacking the taurine transporter, weighted swimming performance deteriorated from 118+/-2.3 min to 10+/-2.5 min, treadmill running ability was reduced by 80%, and skeletal muscle atrophied with some loss of muscle tissue. cells.
