What disease causes your eyes not to close?

If a person cannot close his eyelids and even sleeps with his eyes open, then most likely he suffers from a serious ophthalmological pathology. In this article we will tell you which disease prevents you from completely closing your eyes.

The inability to close the eyelids is called lagophthalmos in ophthalmology, and “hare’s eye” in common parlance.

In people with lagophthalmos, the eyelid does not fulfill its function - to protect the eye and promote the renewal of the tear film. And this is the main danger of pathology. The mucous membrane dries out, eye protection is impaired, which leads to damage to the cornea and conjunctiva. At an early stage, the problem is redness, excessive dryness of the eyes, fear of bright light and discomfort after sleep. Later pain and vision problems occur. As the pathology develops and in the absence of proper therapy, erosive and ulcerative damage to the cornea may begin.

Lagophthalmos can be caused by several reasons, in particular paralysis of the facial nerve, post-traumatic or postoperative eversion of the eyelids, the presence of scars on the face, exophthalmos, accretion of the eyelids to the conjunctiva.

Various factors can provoke an ophthalmological defect: strokes and other diseases of the central nervous system, infections, influenza, meningitis, ear diseases.

Tumor of the upper part of the lung

The growing formation compresses the nerve endings leading to the eyeball. Only with cancer of the apex of the lung does this condition occur, since the parasympathetic system predominates there. After the tumor is removed, the functioning of the eyelids will be restored.

Symptoms of eye inflammation

Symptoms of this problem can be: lacrimation, redness of the mucous membrane of the eye, photophobia. First of all, such symptoms can be diagnosed as acute conjunctivitis, which is provoked by cocci, pathogenic chlamydia, E. coli and other microbes. Favorable conditions for such a disease can also be contributed by poor personal hygiene, improper care of contact lenses, decreased immunity, and trauma to the mucous membrane.

These symptoms are also signs of dry eye syndrome, which may indicate poor hydration of the mucous membrane. There have been cases when dry mucous membranes and sore eyes in the morning occurred in people who spent a lot of time in front of the computer. Large visual loads may occur with poor mobility of the eyeball and infrequent blinking. This can lead to changes in the tear film, which is responsible for keeping the eye moist and clean. Unfavorable conditions for this may include dusty or smoky rooms.

Hormonal changes in the human body, such as, for example, menopause, can also affect eyelid pain in the morning.

Masks

All masks should be applied to a gauze pad and kept for 10-15 minutes.

From raw grated potatoes

Add flour, sour cream or fresh milk to raw grated potatoes. Stir until creamy.

From greenery

Add sour cream to the greens and stir.

Oil masks

It is best to make them from any kernel oils, such as apricot, peach, almond. It is necessary to moisten a cotton pad and apply it to the eyelids.

After the mask, you need to wash your face with cool water and apply eye cream along the massage lines. After 20 minutes, blot the cream with a napkin.

For those who find it difficult to open their eyes in the morning, you can do the following exercises:

  1. Stretch well, roll several times from side to side. Don't hold your breath while doing this. On the contrary, breathe deeply and calmly.
  2. Open your eyes and mouth wide several times.
  3. Close your eyes tightly (6 times), do 12 light blinks.
  4. Exercise for tired eyes “writing with your nose”: close your eyes. Imagine that the tip of your nose is a pen with which you can write. Now write whatever you want in the air with your pen.
  5. Eyebrow exercise: Raise your eyebrows as high as possible, while observing the sensation that appears at the top of your ears. In the future, this sensation will need to be done without raising the eyebrows. Take your time, this is difficult to do the first time.
  6. Palming: Sit up straight and relax. Close your eyes so that the middle of the palm of your right hand is opposite your right eye, the same with your left hand. The palms should lie softly, there is no need to press them forcefully to the face. The fingers can cross on the forehead, they can be located side by side - as is more convenient for you. The main thing is that there are no “slits” that let light through. Close your eyes. Now place your elbows on the table. The neck and spine should be almost in one straight line. Check that your body is not tense, and your arms, back, and neck should be relaxed. Breathing should be calm.

Now try to remember something that gives you pleasure. You can do this exercise to music. It is very difficult to consciously relax your eyes. Therefore, there is no need to try to control your condition - this will only harm the purpose of the lesson; instead, think about something pleasant.

Eye exercises will help relieve fatigue, and to make your eyes look rested, you can make special lotions and masks:

Eye toning lotions

Lotions can be done:

  • from steep black tea;
  • from herbs (chamomile, mint, sage, dill, parsley, cornflower);
  • you can prepare a mixture:
  • chamomile
  • sage.

Mix in equal proportions. Take one tablespoon of the mixture, one tablespoon of boiling water. Let it brew for 15 minutes, strain, and cool.

All lotions are made using cotton pads. They need to be moistened in the resulting product, squeezed out a little and applied to the eyelids for about 10-15 minutes.

You can alternate cold and hot lotions. To do this, take sage, make two containers: hot and cold, and alternate the lotions one minute at a time for 10-15 minutes. This will relieve puffiness, fatigue, and restore smoothness and elasticity to the skin.

To relieve swelling, you can use used tea bags without additives, after keeping them in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.

How is it diagnosed and treated?

Since hare's eye is a pronounced cosmetic defect, a visual examination by an ophthalmologist is sufficient to diagnose this disease. However, the specialist’s task is not only to make a diagnosis, but also to establish its cause in order to prescribe the correct treatment. Competent treatment of the underlying disease is an important factor for success.

Also, with lagophthalmos, the first step is to prescribe local therapy in order to moisturize the cornea and prevent its pathological changes. On the recommendation of a doctor, you can use eye drops or ointments for this purpose, which form a protective film and prevent moisture from quickly evaporating.

Advanced forms of lagophthalmos are treated surgically, and there are several types of operations, among which the best option is determined by the doctor.

Advanced forms of lagophthalmos

So, you can install an implant in the upper eyelid, suspend the lower one, perform plastic surgery on the palpebral fissure, remove scar tissue changes, install silicone threads in both eyelids, or perform surgery on the muscle that lifts the eyelid. To avoid illness in which you will have to sleep with your eyes open, you can follow preventive measures:

  • protect your eyes from injuries, burns and other damaging factors,
  • undergo regular examinations by a neurologist and other specialists who can identify the underlying disease at an early stage and provide effective therapy;
  • At the first signs of lagophthalmos, seek help from an ophthalmologist.

Opening your eyes correctly after sleep

Home » After sleep » Open your eyes correctly after sleep

Our eyes often do not want to open after sleep. What should you do with them to make this process as easy as possible and to prevent swelling and bags under the eyes?

I suggest you familiarize yourself with a simple set of morning exercises for the eyes, which improves vision and is a good remedy against wrinkles. It can be done with both open and closed eyes.

Exercise 1. Rotate your eyes 4 times in one direction, then 4 times in the other. Same up and down.

Exercise 2. We look left and up, lower our eyes down, then look right and up, and all over again - 8 times.

Exercise 3. This is simply a great exercise that makes your eyes clear and rested. As soon as you wake up, without opening your eyes, thoroughly rub your palms together until you feel warm and lightly tingling. Then place your right palm on the back of your left hand in a cross pattern and apply it to your eyes. Lightly press on the eyeballs, hold your hands for 30 seconds and release. The eyes open very easily and joyfully after this procedure.

In order to avoid swelling and bags under the eyes in the morning, you need to follow some recommendations: do not drink a lot before bed, eliminate or limit alcohol as much as possible, reduce the amount of salt consumed, monitor blood pressure. You should not use diuretics, choleretic or any other radical methods - they should be prescribed by doctors.

Follow these simple recommendations, and your eyes will not act up after sleep, preventing you from waking up.

Causes of morning discomfort in the eyes

Insufficient hygiene

Poorly washed off makeup at night in women and not washed off daytime dust from the face in men can become, and most likely, sooner or later will cause eye irritation. Micro particles of the irritant accumulate on the eyelashes, from where they enter the mucous membrane. Over time, this can cause microtrauma to the eyes, which will react very quickly to the irritant.

Insufficient rest

Overstrain of the muscles of the visual organs, for example, due to spending many hours in front of a computer monitor, reading or work requiring attention, causes a similar pain in the muscles of the arms if you overwork physically. If you don't get enough rest, your eyes will hurt after sleep. With prolonged exposure, insufficient rest will affect vision.

Mismatch between contact lenses and glasses

This topic has been touched upon several times. An incorrectly selected optical power will cause tension in the eye muscles. In addition, the material from which contact lenses are made can cause individual intolerance, and as a result, irritation.

Injuries

Mechanical damage and thermal burns to the eyes may not be noticeable at all. The patient simply does not pay attention to this. But, the injury manifests itself after waking up, when the eye muscles, after relaxation, begin to tense. Remember that injuries include a speck that simply gets into the eye.

Allergy

An allergic reaction, regardless of origin, can cause irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and even contribute to the appearance of purulent discharge. After eliminating the allergen, the discomfort stops.

Colds

Cough, severe runny nose, nasopharyngeal infection - all this can also cause severe, pressing pain in the orbits of the eyes. It is not uncommon for blood vessels to burst.

Dry eye syndrome

Insufficient moisture of the mucous membrane due to being in a dusty, dry or smoky room causes unpleasant sensations that pass fairly quickly. But, if a negative atmosphere affects a person for a long time, this syndrome will develop and will cause a lot of unpleasant sensations that intensify after sleep.

Hormonal changes in the body

This point should also not be excluded, especially during menopause. Eye diseases

It is logical that eye disease also causes unpleasant symptoms. For example: conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis, blepharitis, cyclitis, as well as a disease such as glaucoma.
