Is Careprost harmful?

This cosmetic product for eyelash extensions causes a lot of controversy among many about the advisability of its use.

When using it, darkening of the skin of the eyelid often occurs at the sites where the drug is applied, as well as pigmentation of the eyelashes. After stopping the application of the drug, after some time these reactions disappear.

Hypertrichosis may also occur, there will be too many hairs and the eyelashes may grow in different directions, crossing one another, which will cause a lot of inconvenience.

Very rarely, when using Careprost, conjunctivitis, irritation of the mucous membrane, dryness of the eyes, severe pigmentation of the skin and eyelashes are observed.

Pharmacological properties

The main active ingredient of the Careprost solution, bimatoprost, is a modulated analogue of prostaglandins. The effect of its external use is the stimulation of prostaglandin receptors responsible for hair growth. Careprost solution, when used daily, activates eyelash growth, helping to increase their volume and length, as well as reducing renewal time.

Does not cause irritation upon contact with the mucous membranes of the eyes. When you stop using it, hair growth begins to regress and over time it returns to its original state.

For those who bought Careprost, you need to know how to store this cosmetic product so that it does not spoil. According to the instructions, Careprost should be kept in a room with an air temperature of 3 to 25 o C.

Few people have used Careprost during pregnancy, because the possibility of its use during this period is very doubtful.

How to use the product

Careprost in original packaging

Many women wonder how to use Careprost for eyelash growth. Reviews say that the drug should be applied to the eyelashes at night before bed. Before doing this, you should definitely wash off your makeup, and then wait until the moisturizers are completely absorbed and the water droplets dry on the skin after washing.

You should also remove your contact lenses. They are allowed to be put on again only 15 minutes after applying the eyelash extension solution.

The instructions for Careprost (reviews confirm this) say that for more convenient application of the cosmetic solution, the package contains a special applicator. Holding it in a strictly horizontal position, apply one drop of the solution to it, and then immediately treat the eyelashes.

"Careprost" can only be applied to the eyelashes of the upper eyelid - from the inner corner of the eye to the outer along the roots. This operation should be performed very carefully, in one movement.

After applying the product, wipe off excess from the skin using a cotton pad. Even a small amount of the substance can cause unwanted vellus hairs to appear on the skin of the face, which will subsequently be very difficult to get rid of.

"Careprost" is strongly not recommended for increasing eyelashes on the lower eyelid, since long hairs in this area look unsightly.

If the product gets into your eyes, there is nothing to worry about. Reviews of Careprost confirm that the medicine does not harm vision.

Experts recommend applying the eyelash enhancement product no more than once a day. If you apply the solution more often, you will not achieve any additional effect. If you forget to apply the product before bed, simply skip one day of treatment. You should not apply the solution in the morning. Continue your course as usual.

Application applicators can only be used once. After use it must be thrown away. For each eyelid you need to use only a sterile applicator: this will protect you from possible diseases of the eyes and facial skin.

To avoid infection in the eyes, you should ensure that the bottle cap and the brush for applying the product are clean before each use. It is forbidden to touch them with your fingers.

A woman will be able to notice visible results within a month after daily use. The maximum length of the eyelash is reached after three months of applying the solution. One 3 ml bottle is enough to achieve the desired result.

After the bottle is empty, you should let your eyelids rest and stop the procedures for several months. However, it should be remembered that a sharp pause after regular use of Careprost will lead to the fact that within a month the eyelashes will regain their original nondescript appearance. To avoid such an unpleasant situation, you should gradually wean your hair off the drug. To begin with, you can apply the solution every other day, then take a break of two days. After this, you can stop applying altogether.

Careprost customer reviews

If doctors' reviews of Careprost for eyelash growth are clearly negative, then the opinions of women who have used this drug are very different.

There are frankly flattering reviews about Careprost online, but not everyone likes it. In most cases, the drug has a positive effect on the dynamics of eyelash growth, but in some cases this effect is temporary. And after discontinuation of the drug, the condition of the eyelashes either remains the same or even worsens.

Sometimes you can find reviews on the use of Careprost for eyebrows. Reviews indicate that it is much safer to use for eyebrow extensions and darkening. After all, then you can not be afraid of side effects on the organs of vision. Although, in the instructions for use of Careprost in Russian there is not a word about this purpose of the drug.

Careprost[edit | edit code]

Careprost
Careprost

are eye drops widely used to enhance eyelash growth.
When using careparost, the lifespan of eyelashes and length increases (+20-30% in 6 weeks), they become thicker and acquire a more saturated dark color. After cancellation, the effect disappears after a few weeks. The main active ingredient of this drug is Bimatoprost
, a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F2ά.

Careprost was initially used to reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma, but among the effects, a pronounced effect of the drug on eyelash growth was noted.

Mechanism of action[edit | edit code]

Careprost: before and after use,
Careprost activates prostaglandin alpha-F2 receptors, which are localized in the hair follicles. Research from the University of Bradford has also shown that this remedy can be used for baldness and hair transplantation in men.[1]

History of application[edit | edit code]

Since 2001, Bimatoprost has been marketed in the United States and Europe as a treatment for high intraocular pressure, i.e. glaucoma. American ophthalmologists, who prescribe Bimatoprost drops to their patients suffering from glaucoma, soon noticed that one of the side effects of the drug is the growth of eyelashes. According to US law, if a drug is approved and registered for one disease, then it can be legally prescribed for other pathologies. In this case, against hypotrichosis - insufficient hair or eyelash growth. Thus, Bimatoprost has been used as a means for eyelash growth since 2002.

Since 2008, Allergan has been the sole holder of the right to sell eyelash growth products containing Bimatoprost. In clinical studies prior to the registration of the product, called Latisse[2], it was proven that after 2-4 months of use, eyelashes become 25% longer, their volume doubles, and eyelashes become darker[3] . A study led by Professor Randall from the University of Bradford found that Bimatoprost may also have an effect on scalp hair growth in men who have undergone hair transplantation[4].

Also, patients using bimatoprost for glaucoma treatment showed a decrease in orbital fat (i.e. fat around the eyes)[5]. This effect was especially observed in patients who used bimatoprost in only one eye[6]. The effect is reversible after stopping use of the drug. The mechanism is unclear, but bimatoprost is chemically similar to prostaglandin F2α (PGF 2α), which is able to reduce fat by inhibiting adipocyte differentiation[7].

As a result of litigation, competitors RevitaLash, MD LashFactor, AdvancedLash and others were forced to stop using Bimatoprost in their products sold in the US market. In Russia, Allergan's patent is not yet valid, so there are no barriers to selling products containing Bimatoprost analogues in cosmetics.

Side effects[edit | edit code]

Sometimes the use of the drug causes: itching and burning of the mucous membrane, redness of the eyelids, conjunctival hyperemia, skin hyperpigmentation, dry eye syndrome.

In case of accidental contact with the eyes, the drug can cause: dryness of the mucous membrane, visual disturbances, foreign body sensations, burning and pain, blepharitis, cataracts, superficial keratitis, discharge and lacrimation, photophobia, allergic conjunctivitis, conjunctival edema, asthenopia, iridocyclitis, change hair growth, infectious complications, headaches, asthenia.

Possible decrease in intraocular pressure.

Overdose[edit | edit code]

With prolonged overdose of bimatoprost, changes in the color of the iris and hypertrichosis are possible.

Interaction with other drugs[edit | edit code]

When wearing soft contact lenses, they must be removed before instillation of the drug. You can put on contact lenses only after 15 minutes.

Despite the lack of laboratory studies of drug interaction, it must be taken into account that it is possible to enhance the effect of drugs that suppress the central nervous system (alcohol, sedatives, barbiturates, opium derivatives, general anesthetics).

Special instructions and precautions[edit | edit code]

The effect of the drug manifests itself gradually over 2 months. It must be remembered that the effect of using Bimatoprost is not permanent, and if you stop using it, your eyelashes may return to their previous state. In addition, there are sometimes differences in the length of new eyelashes, their thickness, color intensity and direction of growth.
