Antiperspirant deodorant is a product that combines the functions of both a deodorant and an antiperspirant. Simply put, it provides a solid five-star protection not only from unpleasant odors, but also from sweat. No circles under your arms!
OPERATING PRINCIPLE
Aluminum or zinc salts clog the ducts of the sweat glands and temporarily stop the sweating process. And special bactericidal components neutralize bacteria that cause an unpleasant odor, because sweat itself does not have a pronounced aroma.
EVERYTHING HAS ITS TIME
Antiperspirant deodorant is applied only once - before bed, when the activity of the sweat glands decreases. If you apply antiperspirant in the morning, it will not have time to be absorbed: the sweat secreted by the body will simply wash it away.
APPLICATION AREA
Antiperspirant deodorant is applied only to the armpits.
In what situations is antiperspirant relevant?
It is important to understand that sweating is a completely natural process through which our body maintains water-salt balance and gets rid of toxins. We always sweat, we just don’t always notice it! And all because sweat evaporates in small quantities from the surface of the skin, leaving no traces.
So where do the unpleasant wet circles under the armpits come from?
- Constantly excessive sweating may indicate that you have hyperhidrosis, an abnormality in which the body produces too much sweat.
- Temporary increased sweating can occur due to heat, exercise, stress, and even too spicy or hot food. So be careful with Thai cuisine!
As a rule, a good antiperspirant easily copes even with increased sweating. If sweating does not go away, consult a therapist or endocrinologist.
Do deodorants kill beneficial bacteria?
Sweat is a colorless liquid.
It appears due to exposure to bacteria living on the skin. Accordingly, some deodorants have a bactericidal effect. They kill or prevent the proliferation of microorganisms that cause unpleasant odors.
Some substances have this effect, for example:
- triclosan
- farnesol
They began to be accused of killing not only “bad” bacteria, but also “good” bacteria. Thus, say the enemies of deodorants, skin dysbacteriosis is formed. That is, the ratio between bacteria of different species changes.
But these are only theoretical calculations.
There is no scientific evidence that deodorants cause dysbiosis. There are only accusatory articles. Experts do not make any loud statements, because there is no real basis for this. No studies have ever been conducted that would reveal the harmful effects of deodorants on the skin microflora.
Therefore, statements about deodorant dysbacteriosis are nothing more than rumors that do not have any solid basis.
What else can you do to save yourself from the unpleasant smell of sweat?

Even in Ancient Egypt and China, alum was used to get rid of the smell of sweat. This rock mineral is a mixture of aluminum and potassium salts, and helps absorb excess moisture without blocking sweat ducts like an antiperspirant does. Thanks to the acid in its composition, alum also has an antibacterial effect, and, as you know, it is bacteria that lead to the appearance of an unpleasant odor in sweat. However, alum also has its downside. For example, individual intolerance, which may develop during their use. In addition, this substance should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Otherwise, this is an excellent alternative to modern cosmetics that does not pose a danger to the body. Another popular analogue of conventional deodorants and antiperspirants are the so-called “weekly antiperspirants”, which need to be used only once every 7 days. Isn't it tempting? But the aluminum content in such products is almost three times higher than the content in our usual cosmetic products. And this despite the fact that a “weekly antiperspirant” is not a panacea. Yes, it really helps stop the production of sweat in the armpit area, but at the same time it increases moisture production in other parts of the body. However, studies have shown that these drugs do not cause side effects in most cases. Rarely do they lead to itching, allergies and dryness, but this mainly occurs against the background of a person’s individual intolerance to one of the components. Of course, the high aluminum content in “weekly antiperspirants” cannot remain harmless. Salts of this metal can lead to inflammation of the lymph nodes and cause itching. Therefore, such drugs are contraindicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as they can be dangerous for the body of the mother and the unborn child.
Do deodorants clog pores?
Now a few words about “slags”. There are antiperspirants that work by reducing sweat production. Or rather, it is produced, but it is practically not brought out.
It's rare that a woman doesn't use deodorant.
After all, antiperspirants narrow the excretory ducts of the sweat glands. Some argue that this effect is the root of all troubles. They say that toxins do not reach the surface of the skin and remain in the body. Such a statement does not stand up to criticism.
The skin is a single organ; if one area of it is turned off, other areas will work with increased load. In a word, toxins will find a way out, if not under the armpit, then in some other place. A person will not smear antiperspirant all over his body. Therefore, there will always be functioning areas of the skin, and toxins will be eliminated through them.
However, antiperspirants have one drawback.
With increased work of the sweat glands, their narrowing can lead to very unpleasant consequences - for example, hidradenitis. This is a blockage of the sweat gland, which ultimately leads to suppuration. This cannot be done without the intervention of a surgeon.
All this, of course, is unpleasant, so you need to take care. This is easy to do - no need to use antiperspirant before:
- sauna,
- physical activity,
- beach.
In general, before any heavy sweating. If you follow this rule, there will be no complications.
How to use crystal deodorant?
The skin in areas requiring treatment must first be washed and dried. Lightly moisten the mineral and rub it over the body. Wait a couple of minutes until the layer of product on the skin dries, and you can get dressed.
After each use, the solid crystal deodorant must be rinsed with clean water and allowed to dry (you can wipe with a napkin). Then no unpleasant odors will appear on the surface of the mineral. The product must be kept tightly closed.
Alum deodorant removes odor rather than stopping sweating. Therefore, adjacent areas of clothing may still become wet. Underarm sweat pads help solve this problem. They are made of highly absorbent material and are compatible with all types of fabric.

Are deodorants potentially carcinogenic?
Now a few words about carcinogenicity. Almost all cosmetic products contain preservatives. Very often, a group of substances under the general name “parabens” . They are found in:
- creams,
- lotions,
- skin masks,
- decorative cosmetics.
But only deodorants contain parabens that are hazardous to health. They cause breast cancer. This is how it is written – very categorically – in many popular articles. They are based on a statement by British scientists who discovered that breast tissue accumulates parabens.
What can be said in response to this discovery?
- First, according to published information, only a few dozen patients participated in the studies. This is unacceptably small, because in order to identify a clear relationship, a large sample is needed. At least several thousand people are required.
- Secondly, there was no mention of whether parabens accumulate in healthy cells. If so, then the carcinogenicity claims are very, very questionable.
- Thirdly , substances that accumulate in tumor tissues are not necessarily the cause of this very tumor. In order to identify the connection between cancer and deodorants, very serious research is needed.
In the meantime, claims about carcinogenicity have absolutely no basis.
Of course, mass reports about the dangers of deodorants arouse suspicion - such is our human nature. Many people think that “there is no smoke without fire.” But I would like to say again that there are no real reasons for fear. But the most suspicious and doubtful cannot be reassured with such words.
Well, only one thing can be advised to such people - they need to stop using deodorants containing parabens. The only catch is that almost all anti-perspirant products contain this group of preservatives. In order to avoid contact with them, you should completely forget about deodorants.
Parabens
In cosmetics, parabens usually play the role of preservatives. But research has shown that they are not as safe as originally thought. Some of them can affect the production of hormones, including estrogens. Consequently, this increases the risk of developing cancer. And although there is no exact confirmation of this theory, many experts are sure: parabens and cancer are inextricably linked. But since tumor formation is a complex multi-step process that can take several years, many additional studies are required to confirm the connection between diseases and these cosmetic components.
Ideal shape
But there is another, more compromise way out of the situation. You should try to buy a deodorant that contains a minimum amount of preservatives. How to choose such a tool?
To do this, you need to follow several rules:
- Firstly , you need to pay attention to the expiration date - the longer it is, the more preservatives,
- And secondly, a lot depends on the container in which the cosmetic composition is enclosed.
There are always fewer preservatives where there is tightness.
For example, the most parabens are added to dry sticks. A lot of these substances are also contained in deo-creams squeezed out of a tube. But the same cannot be said about sprays - after all, the contents of these cans are inaccessible to air. This means that it is practically not subject to decomposition. Accordingly, fewer preservatives are added there. Roll-on deodorants occupy an intermediate place between creams and aerosols. .
But, as already mentioned, only the most suspicious people pay attention to the amount of preservatives. The rest, when choosing the form of deodorant, are guided by completely different principles. The main one is, of course, the smell.
There are the least parabens in sprays
However, we should not forget about other characteristics. For example, prey is completely unsuitable for people with sensitive skin. In this case, a high concentration of alcohol can cause a lot of trouble, ranging from redness to persistent skin itching.
It is better for such people to give preference to neutral deo-creams and perfumed powder.
But you also need to be careful with the latter - after all, such powder, along with deo-talcs, is contraindicated for people with dry skin . Again, it is better for them to use creams. Those contain the maximum amount of moisturizing and healing ingredients:
- allantoin
- chitosan
- chamomile extract
- aloe extract
Products with such additives are least likely to cause irritation or any other side effects.
If the smell of sweat is a big problem, then the deodorant must contain antibacterial additives. They will destroy colonies of microorganisms, which are the root cause of all troubles. Antiperspirants are recommended when sweating is moderate.
And, as already mentioned above, such means should not be used before increased physical activity - this should never be forgotten.
Antiperspirants have one more feature: they need to be applied to dry, freshly washed skin. The fact is that these means only inhibit the production of sweat and are absolutely powerless if it has already been released. So it is useless to use them during the day; it is best to do this in the morning, after getting out of the shower.
Crystal deodorants with and without additives
Manufacturers produce these products primarily in their pure form - they have no fragrance or coloring. They should be used by people who actively use perfumes to avoid mixing odors.
There are crystal deodorants with various additions that give the product a light aroma and also have one or another effect. For example, mangosteen softens and soothes the skin, removes irritation and redness. Ginger enhances the antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect of alum, and also helps whiten the epidermis. Tamarind moisturizes and nourishes the skin, stimulates cell renewal.
Deodorant stains
And one more nuance. Some deodorants react with the sun's rays, causing dark spots to appear on the skin. That is why it is not recommended to use deodorants before sunbathing. This is especially true for products containing:
- PABC
- some antibacterial additives
- bergamot oil
- all citrus oils.
All these substances cause photosensitivity - that is, the skin becomes more sensitive to the sun. Within 30-40 minutes, ultraviolet radiation causes the appearance of dark spots, which are then very difficult to get rid of - this will take at least several weeks.
So before going to the beach you just need to take a cool shower, or even better, use infusions of medicinal herbs - they also inhibit sweating.
